Our stay in Venice was wonderful.  Renting an apartment is definitely the way to go, especially with kids.  It made us feel at home. Having a bigger, more comfortable place than a hotel room to go back to in between explorations allowed us to enjoy the city at a more leisurely pace. And we loved being able to shop at the local market and cooking fresh food.
