Overlooking the 'Rio de San Barnaba' Canal and just off Campo San Barnaba (where fruit and vegetables are sold from one of the most-photographed boats in Venice and Katharine Hepburn 'made a splash' in David Lean's classic 1950's film 'Summertime') - a splendid duplex apartment, offering a rare and highly sought-after combination of beautifully presented accommodation, a stunning canal side terrace with dreamy views and a private garden, all set against the picturesque architecture of the Dorsoduro district.

Extra-special in ambience and deservedly featuring in Janelle McCulloch's 2007 design and interiors hardback book 'View From The Top: Grand Apartment Living' (within which an entire chapter is devoted to the apartment), Ca' Barnaba sleeps up to nine guests in roomy, flexible accommodation with internet and air-conditioning.

Decorated and furnished from top-to-toe in quietly sophisticated tones and refined fabrics, the ground floor is home to accommodation comprising a comfortable double bedroom, an en suite bathroom with bathtub, a dining room with kitchenette and a sitting room allowing guests direct access to the secluded private garden with plentiful outdoor seating.

The main access to Ca’ Barnaba is on the floor above where there's a modern, well-proportioned kitchen - fully equipped with a comprehensive range of appliances including a large fridge, ice-maker and microwave etc. A spacious main living room with relaxing sofas and a dining area gives access, via an intricately leaded French door, onto the long, wide and south-facing furnished terrace. With its trailing greenery and captivating views onto the gentle buzz of the canal below and the apartment's ancient surroundings, it's a memorable spot for breakfasting beneath the rising sun or dining under the stars.

Also on this floor is a further sitting room - bright, airy and featuring a small library and an upright piano for those with a fondness for 'tinkling the ivories' during impromptu 'soirees' at home. This room can also be used as a bedroom thanks to its comfortable double sofa bed and sliding door separating it from the main living room. Two further double bedrooms complete the accommodation on this level - one with an en suite bathroom with bathtub and another in which the double bed can be made into twins (simply ask when booking), to the front of which is a bathroom with bathtub with hands-free shower.

An additional studio apartment on the ground floor comprising a bedroom with a single bed, a bathroom with shower and a kitchenette is accessible from the main Ca’ Barnaba entrance and from the one bedroom ground floor accommodation via the garden.

Within minutes of the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop and the San Samuele Traghetto which, during operating times (please check), ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the Palazzo Grassi Museum of Modern Art and the district of San Marco.

Moments to the Ca' Rezzonico Museum of 18th Century Art, the shops, cafes and action of Campo Santa Margherita and the welcoming neighbourhood restaurants of Calle Lunga San Barnaba and merely steps away from one of Venice's hidden musical hotspots - the cosy and well-reviewed Venice Jazz Club, discreetly located just along the 'fondamenta'.

OUR COMMENT

A highly recommended and enormously enjoyable option for those seeking first-class standards of accommodation, a gorgeous terrace and garden and a gently buzzing yet tranquil location with all conveniences close at hand.

Please note that this apartment is also available minus the ground floor accommodation & garden – please see Ca’ Barnaba Terrace for further details.
