Description
Atelier del Marangon
NEW LISTING!
A carpenter’s workshop reborn as an industrial-chic retreat, moments from the Fondamente Nove waterfront in the Cannaregio sestiere.
Finely chiselled into shape under the creative eye of its professional sculptor owner and giving centre stage to a startling amalgamation of ancient architectural elements and contemporary materials, to enter Atelier del Marangon** is to encounter another side to the city, one that champions innovation rather than harking back through history.
A cavernous Venetian hideaway lavished with high-end touches and framed by towering original timbers and exposed brickwork imprinted with vestiges of the distant past, this exceptional space embraces its minimalist aesthetic in such a skilled manner that it becomes a work of art in itself.
Shining a spotlight on an eclectic collection of original art and sculpture, and taking in an enormous, vine-shaded private outdoor courtyard garden to boot – the air-conditioned property sleeps 4 guests in 2-bedroomed comfort spread over the ground floor and galleried mezzanine level.
Silent, serene and boasting underfloor heating (on the ground floor), Wi-Fi connection (naturally), and a film projector rather than TV (more in keeping with its open-plan proportions), this jaw-dropping, loft-style apartment comprises:
An unassuming private entrance on the Calle Larga dei Botteri belying the extraordinary property within… close to the house of Italian Renaissance painter, Titian, and the Fondamente Nove vaporetto (water bus) stop (with no bridges to cross in between) for easy travel around town, trips to the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello and, for summertime fun, the beaches of the Lido
Ground Floor
An enormous design-led, open-plan main living / dining / kitchen area with roughly hewn timbers, bare brickwork and polished concrete flooring lit by rows of track lighting, and edged with an entire wall of tall steel-framed windows and central door leading out into the pretty furnished private courtyard garden beyond – an al-fresco heaven freshly planted with flowers and shaded by a canopy of well-established vines
A bespoke wood and marble contemporary kitchen equipped with a full range of appliances
A separate laundry room with a washing machine and dryer, handy for longer stays
A guest / service bathroom (w.c. and wash basin only)
A bespoke wood and iron cantilevered staircase at one end, lit by a pair of vintage pendant lamps and rising in stages to the….
1st Floor mezzanine level, home to:
2 quietly luxurious double en suite bedrooms in understated neutrals with rooflights overhead, warm wooden flooring underfoot and floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking (and opening onto) the galleried landing and light-filled living space below – one with a double bed, the other with 2 single beds* and each with their own sparkling en suite bathroom with shower
*Please note that these 2 single beds cannot be joined together to make a double
**Atelier del Marangon (The Carpenter’s Workshop) takes its name from the skilled shipbuilding woodworkers of the famous Venice Arsenale which, at the height of its immense power in the 16th century, was thought to have produced a galleon a day. Of all the bells in the Campanile (bell tower) of St. Mark’s Square, the ringing of the Marangona bell signified the start and end of the Marangoni’s working day and its deep, soulful peal can still be heard at noon and midnight to this day
OUR COMMENT
A colossal surprise behind closed doors which must be seen to be believed! – an artisan’s haven made home, curated to delight and the setting for the Kenyan Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale of Art (2022).
A gentle stroll to the Rialto Bridge via the charming little square known as Campo Santa Maria Nova (see the dainty jewel-box church of Santa Maria Dei Miracoli), to the imposing Dominican Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo – one of the largest churches in Venice and burial place of no fewer than 25 Venetian Doges – and to the Church of the Gesuiti with its breathtaking marble ‘tapestries’ and statues of the Apostles.
Close to several highly regarded restaurants including the charming, hidden-away Osteria Alla Frasca, Ostaria Boccadoro (excellent seafood!) and, even closer to home, Algiubagio with its innovative cooking and delightful over-water terrace and Ristorante Pizzeria da Alvise with its terrace and traditional fare.
Within easy reach of the Coop Giorgione supermarket at Rio Tera Santi Apostoli and the Coop Querini at the eastern end of the Fondamente Nove for all your self-catering needs, and within seconds of a Vino Sfuso (wine on tap) shop and the famous and very traditional letterpress printing workshop of Gianni Basso (see the exquisite card designs in his window) – both virtually on your doorstep along the Calle del Fumo.
