Description
‘If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.’
― Marcus Tullius Cicero
And at charming Ca’ Carmini there’s a garden, books and more!
Offering a wonderfully faded and cosy Venetian elegance just to the rear of the noble 16th century canal-side Palazzo Foscarini ai Carmini (whose towering façade with arched ‘serliane’ windows provides backdrop to James Bond’s perilous gondola ride in the 1979 classic 007 movie ‘Moonraker’!) sits this characterful 1 bedroom duplex Venetian home.
Sleeping up to 4 guests in peaceful surroundings literally moments from the ancient Church of Santa Maria Dei Carmini, the Scuola Grande dei Carmini with its ceiling paintings by Tiepolo, and the lively buzz of the students’ favourite Campo Santa Margherita, Ca’ Carmini is laid out over 2 floors of the Palazzo and is both gracefully furnished and rich in laid-back appeal.
Peppered with period features and the comforts and conveniences of home including air-conditioning, Wi-Fi connection, and a washing machine (so ideal for longer stays), the apartment is reached via the Palazzo’s main ‘androne’ (hallway) which in turn leads guests outdoors and into Ca’ Carmini’s private walled and furnished courtyard garden – the perfect spot for ‘aperitivi’ before heading out to dinner or whiling away the hours with a glass of wine and a good book.
Once inside, accommodation comprises -
Ground Floor
• A chintzy and heavily beamed sitting-cum-dining room overlooking the garden with artwork covered walls, a sofa, a double sofa bed, plus a dining table for 4
• A compact yet well-equipped galley-style kitchenette
• A small and simple bathroom with shower
Stairs to the First Floor where you’ll find
• An attractive 2nd sitting room also overlooking the garden and featuring wooden flooring, a pair of sofas, a desk/study area, and an extensive collection of art-inspired books (mainly in Italian, French and English) – please read and enjoy to your heart’s content!
• A stylish main bedroom presented in a rich and relaxing Venetian red and with a double bed, wooden flooring, decorated beams and soft lighting
• A further bathroom, simple in style, with bathtub and hand-held shower
OUR COMMENT
A well-loved Venetian home with personality and a garden, and a stylish yet comfy art book-lover’s delight!
Wonderfully situated in a special part of Dorsoduro where residents and students from the university meet for a ‘spritz’ and to catch up on news, and where cafes, eateries, bars and gelaterie all join together in creating a buzzing and very local (and very ‘real’) Venetian atmosphere.
A short walk to the Church of San Sebastiano and its marvelous Veronese paintings, to the beautiful Ca’ Rezzonico Museum of 18th Century Venice on the Grand Canal, to the stunning and sunny Zattere promenade, and to 2 vaporetto (water bus) stops (San Basilio and Ca’ Rezzonico) for hassle-free travel to the many must-see sights around town.
Close to the popular Venice Jazz Club and to the fruit and vegetable boat moored at San Barnaba, and to some of our favourite Venice restaurants including Da Codroma, Alla Bifora, Enoteca Ai Artisti (booking a must due to its tiny size!), Ai Quatro Feri, plus Pane Vino e San Daniele in sleepy Campo dell’ Angelo Raffaele – setting for the wonderful novel ‘Miss Garnet’s Angel’ by Salley Vickers.
Within moments of a traditional ‘macelleria’ (butcher’s shop), a well-stocked 2 floor Punto Simply supermarket, Campo Santa Margherita’s fresh fish, fruit and vegetable stalls, plus 2 ‘vino sfuso’ (wine on tap) shops satisfying all your self-catering needs.
Also within easy walking distance of Piazzale Roma if travelling light!

Provide more adequate supply of mosquito coils, and plug ins throughout the apartment especially if guests arrive late in the day. A welcome pack would add a nice touch.

Dear Sir / Madam, All I can say is that EVERYTHING for me was perfect! My daughter Lydia and I have had a most happy time staying in Venice recently and this was largely due to the stress free, high quality service, provided by VOV from first booking some months ago to leaving during the Aqua Alta on Monday! This follows a pattern over the many years VOV have provided accommodations for me in properties various. This comes with my best wishes and grateful thanks to everyone at Views on Venice and in particular Irena. Yours truly.

We really enjoyed our stay here: thanks to your welcome pack we entertained friends for drinks in our private garden on our first evening! The apartment was spacious and we could even have shared it with them if we'd booked earlier. It was fantastic having a washing machine too & our clothes dried quickly in the garden -so convenient! We also loved the location -tucked away in a quieter neighbourhood far from the madding crowds we almost felt like locals! It was easy walking to the vaporetto stop (just a bit more challenging with luggage over the cobbles & bridges, but you only do that twice!) Great area -thanks!

We have stayed in Ca’Carmini three times (and Ca’Meraviglia twice). The apartment is the perfect size to share with two living rooms and two bathrooms. It is also charming and comfortable, and feels like a home with its books and artwork. The garden with its white fragrant flowers is lovely, and nearby Campo Santa Margherita with restaurants, supermarket and shops makes it very convenient. As for Views on Venice, they are wonderful! This time we took advantage of the concierge service to book a water taxi to and from the airport. Annalisa met us, along with driver Guido, and both were so helpful and made us welcome immediately. As one of our party was rather frail, it was a great relief to have extra helping hands after the long flights. Annalisa and Irene were so nice to work with throughout our stay and very accommodating of a couple of extra requests we had. Mille grazie to you all.

Absolutely lovely apartment. I hadn't realized ahead of time the pretty garden courtyard would be private just for us, which was a delightful bonus, and allowed us to do an impromptu barbecue. The apartment is in a great area conveniently near St Basilio vaporetto, excellent supermarket, and a host of delightful bars and restaurants. I am very appreciative indeed of the help I received from Cristina with booking restaurants (and her restaurant recommendations). The advice re transport from the airport was also very helpful (the Alilaguna waterbus into town was great.) I am 100% satisfied (for the second time) with Views on Venice, in terms of both accommodation and service, and highly recommend it.

We just got back from our Venice trip and had a wonderful time staying in this apartment. It's very spacious two floors, with a living room, small bathroom, and kitchen on the first floor, and another living room, larger bathroom, and bedroom on the second floor. In addition, there was a beautiful outdoor private garden area for us to enjoy. I love that the upstairs living room was completely lined with full bookshelves. It gave the apartment a very classy, cozy feel. The location was perfect. We were an easy walk from the Grand Canal and the CA Rezzonico vaporetto stop, as well as the Accademia Bridge and many other sights, restaurants, shops, etc. Check in was a breeze we were met by a nice young woman at the CA Rezzonico vaporetto stop who led us on the short walk to the apartment. She gave us a quick run-through of all the particulars. The was also a big welcome booklet from Views On Venice with lots of helpful information, including tons of listings for restaurants around the city, which we used extensively. In general, communication was great throughout our stay. All in all, we had a great time staying in this apartment, and would definitely stay there again on any future visits we make to Venice.

On arrival the appt was only prepared for two people and not four people. Extra linen was dropped off an hour later so not a problem. However, we did not understand how to open out the sofa beds and spent a long time trying to figure out how to do this. It would be preferable if the beds were prepared for the client's arrival to avoid this issue. Apart from this everything was excellent. The best thing of all was how personal your service is compared with sites like airbnb. Every query/issue was dealt with immediately (even on Sunday) by a person, with a name, who knew Venice and their business like the back of their hand. This is exactly what a traveller likes to find when in a new city and it allowed us to enjoy our few days to the utmost.

We loved Ca' Carmini and having previously stayed elsewhere in Venice would have to argue that this location in Dorsoduro is perfect it's so close to Accademia and to Fondmenta Zattere and adjacent to Campo Santa Margherita and close to... Everywhere! We loved the ambience of the apartment with its extensive library (mainly in Italian and French) of beautiful Art books. We did have to clamber over the acqua alta barrier going in and out, but that was fine and better than being caught out. The garden would be brilliant in most seasons (the temperature hovered around zero in our January stay) and gave a sense of being in our very own Venetian hideaway. Yes, ideally the upstairs (main) bathroom would have a setting that allowed for a non-hand-held shower and yes, the kitchen isn't huge, but there are so many restaurants around that we felt no urge to cook - lots of helpful info about restaurants was provided. It was lovely to have coffee provided for the stovetop coffee pot, as well as jam and "biscuits", and to have a supermarket two minutes walk away. We would recommend NOT organising a water taxi on departure if tide levels are over 100cm, as apparently taxis couldn't get to us and the fondamenta either side of the apartment had water over it, as did the one opposite to the right. However, we had no trouble getting to the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop, and acqua alta in its beauty and its hassles is part of Venice life. It would be handy if the number that Views on Venice texts info from were able to reply to questions about leaving out of hours, as this didn't happen (but I didn't ring, only texted and they did eventually ring during the water taxi problems and were very helpful the rest of the time). We stayed here 13 nights and didn't want to leave, we highly recommend Ca' Carmini!
