Description
La casa d'Oriente
An imaginatively attired attic near the house of legendary 13th-century explorer Marco Polo, on the cusp of 3 districts between Sant’ Apostoli and Rialto
Dating all the way back to 1500 (and beyond!) and situated beside the charming coral-coloured church of San Giovanni Grisostomo, this highly original haven opens its arms to laid-back living in characterful surroundings with rooftop terrace on the building’s top 2 floors*.
Dressed with oodles of artistic flair and an eye for the unusual with an eclectic furnishings and object d’art giving a distinctly creative vibe, the newly discovered La casa d'Oriente sleeps 4 guests in 2-bedroomed accommodation which is beautiful in all seasons and cooled by air-conditioning in the summer months.
Restored under the guidance of interior designer Gino Giacomin and located close to the Fondaco Dei Tedeschi and Teatro Malibran in an area once known for its silk trade, the apartment offers Wi-Fi along with a smattering of high-tech touches and comprises:
• A communal entrance tucked away on the Calle del Cagnoletto (Street of the Dogfish!) with stairs rising up to the
2nd Floor where we find
• A strikingly attractive open-plan main living area consisting of a sitting/dining area and kitchenette set beneath sloping wooden eaves crafted from heat-treated fir and showcasing:
A large L-shaped corner sofa sumptuously dressed in rare silk velvets crafted in a laboratory in Cannaregio where fabrics are still dyed using 300 year old machines, a 1960s Steinway baby grand piano equipped with a 'silent' system so one can play at any time of the day or night without disturbing your fellow guests, plus LED dimmable lighting and a bioethanol fireplace for cosiness during Venice’s atmospheric winter evenings
A dining area with large table seating 6-8 guests crafted from bricola** wood, its gentle curves recalling the distinctive shape of a Venetian gondola
A small but well-equipped kitchenette comprising a gorgeous single section walnut countertop with induction hob, an oven, 2 fridges and a Thermomix
Secret doors from the main room open to reveal La casa d'Oriente’s 2 bedrooms:
• A charming principal bedroom dressed in hand-painted 'Japanese garden' wallpaper crafted in Shanghai, and furnished with a double bed at the head of which hangs a precious original Japanese ‘Uchikake’ (wedding dress)
• A delightful 2nd bedroom lit by film set lighting and featuring Rubelli wallpaper mimicking a view of the Grand Canal, a single/day bed with an additional pull-out single bed beneath, and an original Japanese ‘Uchikake’ displayed just above
• 2 separate bijou bathrooms – one with bathtub and the other with shower
A set of steps rising from the main living area up to the
Rooftop
• Set high above the hubbub – a fabulous furnished ‘altana’ rooftop terrace overlooking the large rose window on the façade of the church of San Giovanni Grisostomo and offering a magical atmosphere particularly on spring and summer evenings
Stairs rising from the main living area up to the
3rd Floor where we find
• The ‘Zen’ area of the apartment, ideal for meditation… an intimate space furnished with large velvet floor cushions for relaxing beneath the beams and made all the more opulent by a Chinoiserie wall dotted with brightly coloured butterflies and birds, and a cascade of 1200 crystals that, when illuminated by a special light at night, create a mesmerizing display of dancing reflections
* Please bear in mind that the apartment is reached by stairs (no lift). We also ask that you refer to the images in the photo gallery for an understanding of the restricted headspace in several areas of the property
** The enormous wooden poles that indicate the waterways for boats in the Venetian Lagoon
IMPORTANT : please note that the apartment only accepts fully supervised children over 12 years of age or under 1 year (non-walking babies) because of the internal stairs, ‘altana’ rooftop terrace.
OUR COMMENT
A bohemian attic abode balancing the unconventional with the traditional.
Splendidly situated at the meeting point of 3 Venetian sestieri (districts) – Castello, Cannaregio and San Marco – a quick sidestep off one of the city’s main arteries linking the Strada Nova/Sant’ Apostoli to San Bartolomeo/Rialto and within walking distance of all the iconic sights and attractions of St. Mark’s Square (via numerous hidden and not-so-hidden routes!) along with a host of Venetian gems, including the dainty jewel-box church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and the house of Marco Polo (the latter situated just moments from your door).
Close to the mesmerising views on offer from the enormous rooftop terrace of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi luxury department store and from the Rialto Bridge (which crosses the Grand Canal to the Rialto food markets of San Polo), and to a variety of shops, bars and restaurants including the old favourites Osteria Al Portego and the semi-hidden and solidly traditional Osteria Il Milion.
Within a short stroll of the vaporetto (water bus) stop at Rialto for exploring the city, the ‘traghetto’ gondola ferries crossing the Grand Canal at Santa Sofia and the Riva Del Carbon, and to 2 well-stocked supermarkets (a Coop and a Despar) also found along the bustling Riva Del Carbon.

The bath-tub with shower head was a tight squeeze for us to get in and out of. The high but narrow shower cubicle was a very tight squeeze for us to get in amd out of. The sheets, towels and flat in general were all very clean however there were dusty corners and dusty high shelves - could do with a spring clean. Just being picky! This property still scores 5 stars! |
