Few places can hold a candle to apartment Corte delle Candele,
Our dazzling duplex penthouse with ‘lofty’ credentials!
Peacefully positioned at the entrance to the tucked-away ‘Court of the Candles’ and named in remembrance of the candle-making artisan workshop that is thought to have existed in this authentic and highly evocative part of Cannaregio way back in the 15th/16th centuries, this ultra-spacious and totally ravishing ‘top of the house’ apartment hosts 7 guests in immaculate and thoughtfully reimagined surroundings.
Set right in the heart of one of our very favourite parts of the city...
...only steps away from the tranquil and timeless Rio de Santa Caterina canal, the long and scenic Fondamente Nove waterfront (where you can board the vaporetto (water bus) to Murano, Burano, Torcello, San Michele, the Biennale Pavilions at Giardini and Arsenale as well as the beaches of the Lido), not forgetting the spectacular Baroque Church of the Gesuiti* with its towering snow-white façade and statues of the apostles (indeed they’re one of the first sights to greet you as you sweep into Venice by private water taxi!)...
...Corte delle Candele comprises 4-bedroomed accommodation expertly configured to take advantage of some very special views on Venice!
An air-conditioned 2-floor duplex covering the building’s entire 3rd and 4th floors and reached via communal stairs to the 3rd floor followed by internal staircase to the 4th, the apartment boasts Wi-Fi and all the comforts of a contemporary home, and includes (starting at the top and working our way down):
Corte delle Candele’s private entrance leading into its hallway where an open-tread wooden staircase rises directly up and into the impressive, multi-functional, open-plan, loft-style sitting / kitchen-dining area with tall windows on 3 sides and a spectacular exposed-brick-and-timber ceiling giving the room incredible character and warmth despite its immense proportions and gloriously ‘open-to-the-skies’ aspect
There’s a compact yet well-equipped kitchen with everything required to cook up a Venetian feast (if you could only tear yourself away from the view of the onion-domed campanile of Santi Apostoli to the side – it’s a tough choice!), while a modern dining suite and informal sitting area with sofa just beyond gives everyone their own space to relax and unwind, and the contemporary stove (not in use) provides a further focal point as it reaches skywards towards the roofline
A pristine guest bathroom with laundry area to the fore houses a handy washing machine and separate tumble dryer allowing you to be ‘onward travel ready’ if visiting Venice as part of an extended tour, while...
A striking 3D-printed classical-style sculpture ‘Man on a Cube’ – inspired by a painting by Roberto Ferri and created by the talented 3D-artist apartment owners – ushers you towards Corte delle Candele’s sunlit 2nd sitting / tv room, home to a further sculpture by the talented brothers, polished wooden flooring, and a large L-shaped sofa where one can chill and hang out while taking in the view of St. Mark’s Campanile – that iconic symbol of La Serenissima – standing proudly in the distance above the topsy-turvy Venetian skyline...
Returning once again to the internal staircase we descend to the sleeping accommodation on the 3rd floor below, where guests can retire to one of the apartment’s 4 gorgeous double bedrooms of roughly equal size, each beautifully presented in restful colours with fine textiles and double beds...
A luxurious dual-aspect principal bedroom dressed in blues and gold with subdued lighting and a sparkling en suite ceramic-tiled bathroom with shower
An elegant 2nd bedroom presented in salvia-sage green and Bellini-peach pink
A delightful 3rd bedroom in sandy neutrals with accents of gold and...
A warm and inviting 4th bedroom in gold and toasty terracotta
...while a further bathroom in dove grey with twin wash-hand basins and shower completes the luxe accommodation
*The Church of the Gesuiti – famous for its amazingly ornate inlaid ‘tapestry’ marble, well worth a visit and possible the coolest place in Venice during the heat of the summer (if it’s open!)
OUR COMMENT
A superb ‘upside-down’ duplex of extraordinary character and style and a great choice for larger parties set away from the madding crowds....
… within a dreamy, much-loved district oozing traditional old-world charm and characterised by peaceful residential areas, wide and sunny canal-side ‘fondamente’ – including the Fondamenta de la Misericordia and de la Sensa – plus a host of historic landmarks including the spectacular fairy-tale Ca’ d’Oro, the ancient Jewish Ghetto and, just around the corner from Corte delle Candele, the little gem known as the Oratorio dei Crociferi, home to a wonderful cycle of paintings by Jacopo Palma il Giovane and founded in the 12th century by the religious order of the Crociferi as a hostel and resting place for pilgrims and crusaders.
Within a stone’s throw of a fabulous selection of local restaurants, osterie and bacari including the tricky-to-find and very charming Alla Frasca with its parasol / awning-topped terrace, the locals’ favourite Alla Vedova (hands down the best polpette in town!), the traditional Bepi Antico 54 da Loris, Ristorante Al Vecia Cavana (fine dining with resident pianist), Osteria Al Tajer, the laid-back Estate ai Crociferi (for a spritz in the cloistered courtyard of a former monastery!) plus the highly regarded Algiubagio fringing on the Fondamente Nove – Venice’s northern waterfront overlooking the waters of the northern lagoon towards the distant snow-topped peaks of the Dolomite mountains.
Within an easy stroll of some of Venice’s most memorable churches including the dainty jewel-box Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Madonna dell’ Orto – final resting place of the painter Tintoretto who lived nearby.
Close to the Strada Nova where you find stores galore to satisfy all your shopping needs! plus a well-stocked Coop Supermarket at San Felice and another at the Giorgione cinema complex near Campo Santi Apostoli.
Convenient for 2 vaporetto stops for hassle-free travel around town – Ca’ d’Oro on the Grand Canal and Fondamente Nove just moments away.
Also, within a stroll of the traghetto at Campo Santa Sofia, which during operating times, ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the Rialto Market (food-shopping heaven!) in the district of San Polo.

An oh-so-chic Grand Canal apartment with a contemporary-style interior
boasting iconic Venetian views that are thrillingly superior!
Gazing down on the jade-green waters gently lapping at its feet along that gorgeous stretch of the Canale Grande between the Ca’ Rezzonico Museum of 18th-century Venice and the Accademia Galleries / Bridge, and eagerly anticipating your arrival within the distinctive terracotta-accented 19th-century Palazzina Marioni * (an exquisite waterside palace designed by architect Lodovico Cadorin, restorer and decorator of rooms within Venice’s famous Caffè Florian in St. Mark’s Square no less), this sleek apartment sleeps 7 guests in pared-down patrician elegance on the 2nd floor of the palazzo in the very heart of Dorsoduro.**
Recently restored from top-to-toe and showcasing imaginative design and superbly crafted custom fittings, the fully air-conditioned apartment runs the entire depth of the palazzo and is dashingly decked out with all the mod-cons one could wish for.
Arrive by private water taxi directly at the palazzo’s private water door before indulging your inner ‘aristo’ as you make yourself at home!
Elevating your Venice holiday experience to dizzying new heights and offering gracious Venetian living within its 4 refined double bedrooms, accommodation is as spacious and flexible as it is unforgettable and comprises:
A bright and breezy main sitting room dressed in salvia green with a tropical pappagallo wall mural and showcasing traditional Venetian polished terrazzo flooring, a contemporary Murano chandelier overhead, a pair of sumptuous sofas in piped juicy mulberry velvet for lounging at your leisure not forgetting a pair of arched windows to the fore drawing your eye towards the truly mind-blowing Grand Canal views beyond
Just off the sitting room sits the stylish streamlined kitchen / dining room with sepia forest mural and feature fireplace – neat, well groomed, well equipped for light cooking and furnished with a dining suite for breakfasting each morning as the Grand Canal springs to life outside your windows, or gradually winds down at the close of each action-packed day
Accessed via a short internal hallway and peacefully situated to the side of the palazzo sits a relaxing double bedroom in easy-on the eye neutrals with terrazzo flooring, a double bed (which can be made into twins – simply request when booking) and a separate beautifully decorated bathroom with shower
A restful 2nd restful double bedroom to the side in similarly uncluttered style and furnished with a French-size bed sleeping one in comfort (or 2 up close!)
A stylish 3rd double bedroom overlooking the palazzo’s shaded private garden to the rear*** with floral feature wall and a Rococo-style double bed which can also be made into twins – again, simply request when booking
And also to the rear, a really rather unique 4th double bedroom with views of the garden...
… bright and airy, the room features warm wooden parquet flooring underfoot, a double bed, a cleverly concealed kitchen area to the rear with a simple dining table which can be folded and stowed away so freeing up all available space to the max – sheer genius!
And completing Ca’ Mainella’s much-adored accommodation (read its reviews!) a 2nd bathroom with ‘tapestry’ mosaic and bathtub with shower over
* Featured on the front cover of the book ‘I Silenzi di Venezia’ by Gian Antonio Cibotto and Giustino Chemello.
** Please note that the apartment is reached by stairs (no lift)
*** Featured as ‘Giardino Balboni a Dorsoduro’ in the book ‘Giardino Segreti a Venezia’ by Cristiana Moldi-Ravenna and Tudy Sammartini.
OUR COMMENT
A fabulous Grand Canal apartment majoring on quiet luxury and its great location and offering exceptional views extending all the way from the Palazzo Grassi Museum of Modern Art to the left, to the Accademia Bridge (beside our office) to the right, with VOV / Dimora Italia’s Palazzo Cerchieri right next door!
Within a stone’s throw of an excellent variety of interesting small shops, traditional bars and restaurants typical of Dorsoduro, including the canal-side Osteria Enoteca Ai Artisti, Ristorante Bakaro, Oniga, Osteria Alla Bifora, Ca’ Del Vento and Osteria Ai Pugni to name but a few… not forgetting the locals’ favourite Cantinone Gia Schiavi-Al Bottegon for super cicheti and Bar Alla Toletta for some of the tastiest tramezzini in town!
A gentle stroll to the ‘Barca Della Frutta e Verdure’ fruit and vegetable boat moored at the café-fringed Campo San Barnaba (don’t forget your camera!), a well-stocked 2-floor Conad supermarket in the lively Campo Santa Margherita for all your self-catering needs, and VOV / Dimora Italia’s very own ‘A Tavola’ Cooking School offering cooking lessons, wine tastings and a delightful private event space on the pretty Rio Della Romite canal... feel free to ask us for further details!
A short amble to the glittering Zattere waterfront with its fabulous panorama across the wide Giudecca Canal, and to the Squero San Trovaso – founded in the 17th century and the oldest of only a tiny handful of working gondola boatyards still left in Venice today, where skilled local artisans continue to craft, maintain and repair gondolas by hand using centuries-old methods.
Also conveniently close to 2 vaporetto (water bus) stops – one at Accademia and the other at Ca’ Rezzonico – for hassle-free sightseeing and easy travel around the city.

A ‘Flagship’ VOV palazzo designed by architects ArchFlorence joining La Marchesa, Ca’ Dell’ Opera, Gondolieri… et al!
Occupying a superb central location with an upmarket vibe – not too busy, not too quiet, and pivotal to all the sights
