Description
Featured in the June 2016 issue of Condé Nast Traveller magazine - ‘My Own Private Venice - the best apartments, palazzos & villas to take over as your own’ (Palazzo Alvera Altana)
Picture a palace....a bohemian beauty, lavish in luxury and whispering privilege. Now pass through its doors and embark on a journey through richness and opulence, true comfort and style.
Overlooking the Grand Canal, benefitting from two superb terraces and occupying the top two floors of the 16th Century 'Palazzo Corner Gheltoff Alvera' in the hushed and genteel San Samuele parish of San Marco, Ca' Dei Colori 1 ('House of Colours') sleeps eight in accommodation which can only be described as 'extraordinary'.
Reached via the Palazzo's private water entrance on the Grand Canal (if arriving by water taxi), or via its delightfully leafy private garden with ancient well-heads to the rear, the apartment combines vivid imagination and unflinching good taste with magnificent artistry and skilled craftsmanship all blending together to create a feast for the eyes and a joy for the senses.
Rewarding guests with delightful discoveries at every turn and conjuring up both the elegance of past times and an atmosphere reminiscent of the distant lands and ancient trade routes on which Venice built her vast historic empire, Ca' Dei Colori 1 (accessed by lift to the 4th floor) features well-proportioned living space and the latest facilities (including air-conditioning, internet connection and maid service on request).
At the centre of the antique-filled apartment is a fabulous beamed main living room/salon and reception hallway - effortlessly chic and decked out in precious oriental rugs, deep comfy sofas and walls lined with literature, portraiture and landscape paintings, off which is a splendid balcony overlooking the Grand Canal and the breathtaking city skyline.
The eat-in kitchen in jade greens, china blues and lacquer reds has a distinct oriental flavour and is expertly equipped with everything one could require, while the vaulted dining room with access onto a furnished terrace of its own is warm and intimate courtesy of its rich wooden flooring, shimmering silk and leather furnishings and subtle lighting.
Also on this level is a quaint and cosy sitting room and three beautifully attired double bedrooms - the softly feminine 'Rezzonico' bedroom with a double, a large closet area and an en suite bathroom with bathtub and separate shower, the 'Frari' bedroom with its sloping beamed ceiling ( with twins that can be made into a double) and marble-clad en suite bathroom with bathtub and the 'Rialto' bedroom with double bed and 'looking glass' features and an en suite bathroom with double-width shower.
A staircase from the reception hallway rising up to the deeply romantic 'San Marco' master suite with its strikingly painted wooden flooring and access at its far end to a wonderful 'altana' roof terrace overlooking the Grand Canal; a sumptuously decorated 'room at the top' presented in muted tones and featuring sloping ceilings, a study area with fabulous views of both St. Mark’s Campanile and the Rialto Bridge, a kilim cushion strewn day bed, plus a sleeping area with velvet draped double bed and en suite shower room which can be separated for enhanced privacy by closure of the double leaded glass doors and silk curtains dividing the room

OUR COMMENT
A remarkable property in a class of its own, highly individual and second to none.
Sharing the waterside with the famous Mocenigo family of palazzi and its landside with the many art galleries and antique shops characterising this sought after and very central part of the city. Within minutes of the Palazzo Grassi Museum of Modern Art, the Accademia Bridge / Academy of Fine Arts, the vaporetto (water bus) at San Samuele and Sant' Angelo, the ‘Traghetto’ gondola ferry which carries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal between Calle Del Tragheto (near Sant’ Angelo) and San Toma in the district of San Polo, and Campo Santo Stefano - one of Venice's best loved squares.

We found the apartment to be extremely well equipped and very comfortable for 14 people....it always felt spacious. The roof terrace was the perfect venue for drinks and dinner in the evening and we had many happy hours there! All in all......a wonderful apartment that exceeded our expectations!

Seek out the surprising ‘Tesori di Celestia’ - Treasures of Celestia - a beacon of antique & designer chic in the Castello sestiere
Lounging languorously behind a grand 15th century palazzo facade in one of the last remaining pockets of solidly traditional Venetian charm, this treasure trove apartment swaddles 8 in a stuccoed wonderland of time-honoured elegance and aristocratic good taste
Wearing the patina of its past with customary Venetian aplomb and harbouring a marvelously curated mélange of ancient beams, gleaming terrazzo and dazzling chandeliers offset with ‘of the moment’ furnishings fully in tune with modern times, the freshly renovated Tesori di Celestia comprises 4 bedrooms & 3 bathrooms arranged in 2 semi-independent apartments* connected by stairs
Promising Wi-Fi and air-conditioned*** luxury in an atmospheric setting a few paces from the virtually undiscovered Campo De La Celestia, accommodation is spread over 2 floors of the palazzo and comprises:
Ground Floor
A private internal entrance into…
A newly created 1 bedroom & 1 bathroom pied-à-terre with wooden beams and terrazzo flooring, perfect for cosying up or hunkering down (!) and comprising:
· An attractively furnished open-plan main living space with a sitting/dining area dressed in a fresh, modern style with an L-shaped sofa, a dining table, plus an up-to-date and fully equipped kitchen at one end with marble splash-back
· An inner hallway with built-in wardrobe leading on one side to a bijou double bedroom with double bed, and an ante-room with washing machine on the other which in turn leads to…
· A luxurious dove grey marble-clad bathroom with up-to-the-minute oval bathtub and separate shower
A monumental stone staircase rises up from the ground floor to the…
First Floor
Home to a remarkable 3 bedroom & 2 bathroom apartment reached via a private internal entrance and comprising:
· A breathtaking sitting/dining room - ravishing in its use of colour - spectacularly adorned with intricate 16th century stuccos, painted wooden beams hung with a Murano chandelier, mirror-like polished terrazzo and a wonderful mix of antiques offset with plump teal-blue velvet designer sofas and a mix of modern lighting - a match made in heaven!
· An up-to-date and fully equipped kitchen to the side with marble splash-back
· An enormous master double bedroom/boudoir where the atmosphere of the palazzo’s history well and truly comes alive! A bedroom to remember - furnished with a wonderfully romantic four poster double bed, a scattering of period pieces, a modern chaise longue - the highlight of which is a spectacular marble fireplace (now used as a bookshelf) fringed with delicate lace-like stuccos which are echoed around the room
· A dainty jewel-box of a twin bedroom with 2 single beds sitting beneath a pair of chandeliers and gilt rococo over-mantle mirrors
And on the opposite side of the apartment…
· A sweet double bedroom - smaller and simpler in style to the others - with a double bed and a pristine en suite dove grey marble-clad bathroom with shower
And finally, just off the apartment landing…
· An additional deluxe bathroom matching in house-style and colour with trendy oval bathtub and separate shower
* Note that the 2 apartments are not available for individual rental (i.e. they must be rented together) and so they are ideal if 2 members of your group would like a little more autonomy/privacy!
OUR COMMENT
Your bounty awaits you on your Venetian voyage of discovery - tucked away off the beaten path but only a short stroll to St. Mark’s square!
A characterful apartment in a remarkably unspoilt area shared with a barely discernable trickle of inquisitive and well-informed visitors seeking out the 'genuine' everyday Venice of gently flapping washing lines, sun-dappled courtyards and characterful calli - yet still close to the action if you want to get busy about town
Within steps of the peaceful Palladian church of San Francesco della Vigna (St Francis of the Vines) with its soaring bell-tower and delightfully peaceful cloisters, and on the 'right' side of town for visiting the Biennale Pavilions at Arsenale and Giardini
A gentle walk to the imposing Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo (one of the largest churches in Venice and burial place of no fewer than 25 Venetian Doges), the richly atmospheric Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni with its paintings by Carpaccio, and to the 'Questura' office of Donna Leon's fictional Commissario Guido Brunetti
Also within a stone’s throw of a 'Punto Simply' supermarket near San Lorenzo and the small local shops of Salizada San Francesco and Barbaria Del Tole for all your self-catering needs… and only 150m to the Vaporetto (water bus) stop at Celestia (with no bridges to cross in between) for travel around the city, trips to beaches of the Lido and visits to the glass-blowing island of Murano, the rainbow-coloured island of Burano and the ancient island of Torcello with its 7th Century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
