Description
Featured in the June 2016 issue of Condé Nast Traveller magazine - ‘My Own Private Venice - the best apartments, palazzos & villas to take over as your own’ (Palazzo Alvera Altana)
Picture a palace....a bohemian beauty, lavish in luxury and whispering privilege. Now pass through its doors and embark on a journey through richness and opulence, true comfort and style.
Overlooking the Grand Canal, benefitting from two superb terraces and occupying the top two floors of the 16th Century 'Palazzo Corner Gheltoff Alvera' in the hushed and genteel San Samuele parish of San Marco, Ca' Dei Colori 1 ('House of Colours') sleeps eight in accommodation which can only be described as 'extraordinary'.
Reached via the Palazzo's private water entrance on the Grand Canal (if arriving by water taxi), or via its delightfully leafy private garden with ancient well-heads to the rear, the apartment combines vivid imagination and unflinching good taste with magnificent artistry and skilled craftsmanship all blending together to create a feast for the eyes and a joy for the senses.
Rewarding guests with delightful discoveries at every turn and conjuring up both the elegance of past times and an atmosphere reminiscent of the distant lands and ancient trade routes on which Venice built her vast historic empire, Ca' Dei Colori 1 (accessed by lift to the 4th floor) features well-proportioned living space and the latest facilities (including air-conditioning, internet connection and maid service on request).
At the centre of the antique-filled apartment is a fabulous beamed main living room/salon and reception hallway - effortlessly chic and decked out in precious oriental rugs, deep comfy sofas and walls lined with literature, portraiture and landscape paintings, off which is a splendid balcony overlooking the Grand Canal and the breathtaking city skyline.
The eat-in kitchen in jade greens, china blues and lacquer reds has a distinct oriental flavour and is expertly equipped with everything one could require, while the vaulted dining room with access onto a furnished terrace of its own is warm and intimate courtesy of its rich wooden flooring, shimmering silk and leather furnishings and subtle lighting.
Also on this level is a quaint and cosy sitting room and three beautifully attired double bedrooms - the softly feminine 'Rezzonico' bedroom with a double, a large closet area and an en suite bathroom with bathtub and separate shower, the 'Frari' bedroom with its sloping beamed ceiling ( with twins that can be made into a double) and marble-clad en suite bathroom with bathtub and the 'Rialto' bedroom with double bed and 'looking glass' features and an en suite bathroom with double-width shower.
A staircase from the reception hallway rising up to the deeply romantic 'San Marco' master suite with its strikingly painted wooden flooring and access at its far end to a wonderful 'altana' roof terrace overlooking the Grand Canal; a sumptuously decorated 'room at the top' presented in muted tones and featuring sloping ceilings, a study area with fabulous views of both St. Mark’s Campanile and the Rialto Bridge, a kilim cushion strewn day bed, plus a sleeping area with velvet draped double bed and en suite shower room which can be separated for enhanced privacy by closure of the double leaded glass doors and silk curtains dividing the room

OUR COMMENT
A remarkable property in a class of its own, highly individual and second to none.
Sharing the waterside with the famous Mocenigo family of palazzi and its landside with the many art galleries and antique shops characterising this sought after and very central part of the city. Within minutes of the Palazzo Grassi Museum of Modern Art, the Accademia Bridge / Academy of Fine Arts, the vaporetto (water bus) at San Samuele and Sant' Angelo, the ‘Traghetto’ gondola ferry which carries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal between Calle Del Tragheto (near Sant’ Angelo) and San Toma in the district of San Polo, and Campo Santo Stefano - one of Venice's best loved squares.

We had a wonderful stay in the apartment. The location was superb and the views from every balcony were delightful. We found the apartment to be extremely well equipped and very comfortable for 14 people....it always felt spacious. The roof terrace was the perfect venue for drinks and dinner in the evening and we had many happy hours there! All in all......a wonderful apartment that exceeded our expectations!

Ring the bell for ‘Curtain Up’ at Ca’ Dell’ Opera Terrace– a tale of transformation from ugly duckling to swan
Lavishly and luxuriously renovated to the same exceptional standards as those offered by our spectacular Grand Canal palazzi and piano nobile properties, and welcoming guests with a comforting sense of warmth and intimacy in tune with its rather cosier yet still more than ample proportions, VOV is delighted to bring you this showstopping new apartment.
Brimming with character and showcasing the fruits of yet another supremely successful creative collaboration between Views on Venice and trusted architect and interior design company Archflorence, Ca’ Dell’ Opera stands proud alongside Ca’ Del Teatro, Ca’ Cerchieri Loredan, Ca’ Dell’ Ulivo, Ca' Della Luce, La Marchesa and Gondolieri in an innovative and highly regarded line-up of VOV - owned and completely restored apartments – individually designed with refinement and taste to elevate them all to the very top of their league, and marrying Venetian spirit and understated glamour with flawlessly executed Florentine flair.
Named and beautifully decorated (though somewhat less ostentatiously!) in homage to the magical jewel-like opera houses of Venice – the Malibran, the Goldoni and, of course, La Fenice – and in memory of those theatres that have long disappeared, Ca’ Dell’ Opera has 4 bedrooms/4 bathrooms and is charmingly located in peaceful Campo degli Incurabili, Dorsoduro, close to the Accademia Galleries and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and steps from the Zattere with its spectacular views.
Sleeping 8 (+1) in a relaxed atmosphere of quiet affluence and comfortable living, the fully air-conditioned* apartment is spread over 3 levels and impeccably presented from top-to-toe in bespoke soft furnishings and custom-built fittings all unique to Ca’ Dell’ Opera.
Important: please note that the apartment only accepts fully supervised children over 6 years of age or under 1 year (non-walking babies) because of the internal stairs and ‘altana’ rooftop terrace.
Generous as well as flexible in terms of space, and boasting a new and truly wonderful furnished ‘altana’ rooftop terrace offering splendid views across rooftops towards St. Mark’s Campanile, Salute and more, accommodation comprises:
Ground floor
• A main entrance hallway leading to a beamed double bedroom with twin beds, gothic-inspired mirrored wardrobe, terrazzo flooring and a smart en-suite bathroom with shower and deluxe fittings.
• A handy utility room with combined washer/dryer on the opposite side of the hallway, and a stairs rising to the level above.
First floor
• A delightful and wonderfully coordinated beamed sitting room in shades of deep duck egg blue with ruby red accents, a Juliet balcony, large L-shaped sofa, custom-designed carpeting and polished marmorino walls softly lit and hung with palazzo-style window-panelled mirrors – veramente delizioso!
• A well-equipped beamed kitchen/dining room – with integrated wine fridge/cooler and Miele oven – in dramatic red marmorino, with banquet seating, a dining table accommodating up to 10 guests, a Juliet balcony and terrazzo flooring.
• A pretty-as-a-picture beamed twin bedroom resembling a leafy garden arbor and with a Juliet balcony to the side. Exquisitely furnished in honey-colour hues with bespoke carpeting and Zoffany ‘Eleanora’ wallpaper as backdrop.
• A stylish beamed master bedroom in subtle olive-grey with double bed, mirrored wardrobe, bespoke carpeting and a splendid en-suite bathroom with bathtub and separate shower.
• A separate bathroom with fabulously large shower and in similar style to the master’s en-suite.
Stairs to –
Second floor
• A wonderfully cosy penthouse suite with beams and parquet flooring, comprising a small sitting room/study/TV room-snug beautifully decorated (again in Zoffany!) and with a sofa (which can be turned into a single bed upon request); a charming double bedroom reached via a small dressing area; and a smart en-suite bathroom with dual-access and shower.
• Stairs (quite steep and with low/restricted headspace**) rising up to the new, furnished ‘altana’ rooftop terrace where you can while away the hours relaxing in the sun, all the time admiring the remarkable city vistas all around (** please be aware that, as a result, these stairs and access to the ‘altana’ may prove difficult for the elderly, children, or those with mobility issues)
OUR COMMENT
Elegance and comfort rolled into one, and one of our finest achievements to date!
A short stroll to the Church of the Salute and to the Punta Della Dogana Center of Contemporary Art at Dorsoduro’s eastern tip, and close to a great choice of eating places and bars including Ai Gondolieri, Lineadombra and Ristorante Riviera for fine dining, and Osteria Al Squero and Cantinone Gia Schiavi for spritz and cicheti.
An easy walk to 4 vaporetto (water bus) stops – Zattere Spirito Santo, Zattere, Salute and Accademia for travel around the city (note that St. Mark’s Square can be reached by vaporetto from Salute in under 5 minutes on Line 1!), to 2 Conad supermarkets – one just behind the Zattere Spirito Santo vaporetto stop and the other at the western end of the Zattere – and to the traghetto at Calle Lanza / Calle del Traghetto San Gregorio which, during operating hours, ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the traghetto stop beside the Gritti Palace in the district of San Marco.
Also within easy reach of the Alilaguna boat stop connecting the Zattere to Venice's Marco Polo Airport.
*Please note that the operation of air-conditioning and heating are subject to municipality regulation. In general, heating is available from mid-October to mid-April, while air-conditioning is available from mid-April to mid-October. Please contact us for further information.
