Description
Sojourn in style in a serene palazzo setting and unlock the secrets of Palazzo Vendramin…
… An exquisite apartment expertly created within a 15th-century canal-side palazzo near the Church of Santa Fosca in the heart of Cannaregio.
Sensitively steered into the 21st century under the direction of noted Venetian architect Alberto Torsello, Palazzo Vendramin provides a calm, unruffled and historically fascinating backdrop to this exceptional Dimora Italia apartment, named ‘Varoter’ (see its dedicated description below).
Integrating chic Italian design with meticulously restored architectural details, this remarkable property offers guests a unique opportunity to sample the joys of elegant palazzo living in one of the most authentic Venetian districts in town.
Standing imposingly on the Fondamenta de Ca’ Vendramin, between the Rio di Santa Fosca and Rio del Trapolin canals, well hidden from the tourist footfall yet with an excellent variety of local amenities very close at hand, Varoter enjoys the best of both worlds.
Thought to have once been home to the large and illustrious Vendramin family (merchants trading in oil, cheese and salted meat, and producers and sellers of soap – the latter bringing them great fame and fortune over time), and representing a harmonious blend of the historical and the contemporary, the palazzo’s cavernous communal ‘androne’ hallway with majestic stone staircase and walls embellished with frescoes provides a fitting welcome at the start of your stay.
And with a nostalgic nod to a bygone era, the apartment Varoter has been named in homage to Venice’s traditional tradesmen and craftsmen, or ‘mestieri’, who in times past would have been familiar characters within La Serenissima’s labyrinth of calli and campi.
An exquisite pied-à-terre on the second floor to the front of the Palazzo (reached by lift) - large, bright and featuring a fabulously tall frescoed ceiling, Venetian terrazzo flooring, a mezzanine bedroom above, and French windows opening onto a long marble balcony overlooking the tranquil Rio di Santa Fosca Canal.
Sleeping 2 (+1) guests, its accommodation comprises –
- An entrance lobby
- An open-plan main sitting/dining room furnished with a plush double sofa bed, a pair of leather Barcelona chairs with matching footstools, and a dining suite seating 4 beneath the mezzanine above
- A well-equipped kitchenette with immaculate brushed stainless steel units
- A pristine bathroom with a traditional style bathroom suite and large modern shower
Glass balustraded staircase with wooden treads rising to
- A glass sided mezzanine, home to a double bed set upon polished wooden flooring and gazing up at the spectacular frescoed ceiling overhead!
**Are you a part of a larger group who’d like to stay close together but in separate apartments? We have another apartment within the Palazzo: , Sartor .
OUR COMMENT
A beautifully furnished jewel of an apartment in a privileged position in the Cannaregio ‘sestiere’…
… A much-loved district with a traditional old-world charm characterised by peaceful residential areas, a host of historic landmarks including the spectacular fairy tale Ca’ d’Oro and the ancient Jewish Ghetto, plus long and wide canal-side ‘fondamente’ including the Fondamente de la Misericordia and de la Sensa (with their fabulous selection of local restaurants and ‘bacari’ – including our favourites Anice Stellato, Paradiso Perduto, Vino Vero and the new-ish - and characterful - bookshop-bistrot-cafe Sullaluna), plus the Fondamente Nove – Venice’s northern waterfront overlooking the waters of the lagoon towards the distant peaks of the Dolomite mountains.
Within an easy stroll of some wonderful churches including the dainty jewel-box Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the Gesuiti with its towering white façade and statues of the Apostles, and Madonna dell’ Orto - final resting place of the painter Tintoretto who lived nearby.
Close to the Strada Nova where you find shops galore to satisfy all your shopping needs! plus a well stocked Coop Supermarket at San Felice.
Convenient to 3 vaporetto (water bus) stops – San Marcuola (Casinò), Ca’ d’Oro and Madonna dell’ Orto – the latter allowing for easy travel to the beaches of the Lido and to the glass-blowing island of Murano, with connections at Fondamente Nove to the rainbow-coloured island of Burano and the island of Torcello.
Also a stone’s throw to the traghetto at Campo Santa Sofia, which during operating times, ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the Rialto Market in the district of San Polo.
***Please note that the operation of air conditioning and heating are subjected to the municipality regulation. Generally, the heating works from middle of October to middle of April, while air conditioning works between middle of Aprile to middle of October. Please contact us for further information.
For arrivals between 8.00 p.m. and midnight there is an additional cost for "late arrival" of Euro 50, to be paid in cash upon arrival. We organize arrivals between midnight and one o'clock with an additional cost of Euro 100, after this time we reserve the right to accept the customer always with a supplement to be quantified according to the time of arrival.
Beds will be arranged as either doubles or twins as shown in the photos. The possibility of turning a double bed into twins or vice versa can be found in the description and must be requested at least 7 days before arrival.

I didn't want to be in the center of tourist attractions and loved our area! We only made coffee to enjoy standing in the windows and looking at all the boats go by. I slept great, the bed was comfy and the shower hot and I loved starting the day by opening the window/doors and seeing the folks on the bridges and the boat traffic! I can't imagine staying in a hotel without the canal view. Did the water taxi and that is a must! Pay the money for the ease in your life. We had the taxi pick us up again for a Burano day. What a dream, right out the front door. Who needs a gondola ride?! Perfect 5 nights in Venice on the canal!

First off, I would like to compliment Views on Venice staff for such courteous professional assistance, from booking to departure. This was our second time using Views on Venice and service is consistently top notch over 12 year interval.
The apartment was very clean, well furnished in contemporary style and offered beautiful views with terrace. Kitchen was finished with high-end stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher, all the dinnerware & cooking supplies one would need appreciated having washing machine in the unit. Bathroom was spacious and nice hot water for showers. The bed was comfortable in the loft. We were very grateful for elevator in building after daily walking bridges all over Venice. We enjoyed being in Cannaregio away from overwhelming crowds around San Marco, yet could walk everywhere with convenience and enjoyment. Also Alilaguna boat buses were easy to use to get to airport, ( use Madonna d’ Orta stop on Orange line) Burano and Murano or the vaporettos on Grand Canal. We would encourage any future guests to arrange a food tour around the Jewish Ghetto and Cannaregio- it is really fun, delicious food and lots of insight into Jewish and Venetian culture and history. |

It was a bit awkward handling our clothes and belongings as the hanging rack was upstairs but no shelving, hooks or drawers upstairs. I would recommend some type of open shelving narrow for aesthetic purposes but would offer convenience for storing things in principal sleeping area. Also utility closet had relatively long wall which could handle hooks for guests wanting to put clothing items out of sight in living room spaces.
Overall we enjoyed the unit very much and appreciated the beauty and high end quality of your properties. |

The location was absolutely perfect, off the main thoroughfare away from the hordes of tourists in a quiet area of Venice, yet really easy to walk to all the main tourist attractions. I also cannot recommend Views on Venice enough. The customer service was excellent and second to none. We requested private water taxi to and fro the airport. This was all arranged by Views on Venice and was impeccable. It completely took any hassle away and even made the journey to and fro the airport a great experience. |

With thanks to Marco for guiding me to the apartment and getting me settled in. The apartment is a short, but interesting walk from the Aligaguna stop. Ideally situated for the best bar in town and the bars and restaurants on Fondamenta de la Misericordia. There's a supermarket just around the corner. There's also a cracking takeaway pizzeria 5 minutes walk away. A brisk 10 minute walk gets one to the vaporetto on the Canal Grande. The apartment is set in an imposing but quiet old house. Very clean, very tidy and equipped with everything that one needs for a short stay. |

The apartment is stylish with a minimalist touch, furnished and equipped to a very high standard and the location perfect. The service provided was exactly in the fashion we prefer, attentive and prompt when needed, otherwise in the background. We had a fantastic stay and got to experience Venice in a less touristy, more explorative way. As we like to walk,
it was very rewarding to get to know Venice on a whole. We definitely benefited from a non-weekend stay and got to enjoy even central parts without the hordes. Mondays seem quietest. |

Building works opposite start early but that’s just the way it is. The canals can get busy but night time is respected. So there isn’t really anything that could have been improved.

This is a beautiful apartment in an absolutely wonderful location, overlooking a lovely little canal, which is, nevertheless, busy with water traffic, so there is lots to view from the balcony. It is not far from the Grand Canal, and very close to the Strada Nuova, a major shopping street, but is quiet. We were most impressed by the Information Book provided by VOV, probably the best such we have encountered in many years of travelling. We loved Venice, its canals and little streets and campiellos, and it was always great to come home to Varoter and its lovely frescoed ceiling.

OUR COMMENT
A Venetian casetta that’s sure to make you smile, just tucked away on Dorsoduro’s ‘Museum Mile’…
A short amble to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the iconic Church of the Salute, the Accademia Galleries and Bridge (and the VOV office!), the Palazzo Cini Gallery, plus the Punta Della Dogana Center of Contemporary Art, and close to a variety of fine eating places and bars including Ai Gondolieri and Ristorante Riviera for fine dining, and Corner Pub, Osteria Al Squero and Cantinone Gia Schiavi for cicheti and spritz.
An easy waterside stroll to 2 Conad supermarkets – one at the western end of the Zattere and a smaller one closer to home at Zattere Spirito Santo – and to 4 vaporetto (water bus) stops – Zattere Spirito Santo, Zattere, Salute and Accademia – for travel around the city (note that St. Mark’s Square can be reached by vaporetto from Salute in under 5 minutes on Line 1!)
Also close to the ‘traghetto’ at Calle Lanza/Calle del Traghetto S. Gregorio which, during operating hours, ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the district of San Marco, and within easy reach of the Alilaguna boat stop connecting the Zattere to Venice's Marco Polo Airport.
The possibility of turning a double bed into twins or vice versa can be found in the description and must be requested at least 7 days before arrival.17 reviews -
